Have you noticed more freckles, fine lines, or uneven skin tone after this summer? You’re not alone. Australia has one of the highest UV indexes in the world, and our skin is constantly exposed to harsh sunlight, humidity, and environmental stress. Even with daily care, years of cumulative exposure often appear as:
• Wrinkles and fine lines
• Freckles, pigmentation, and age spots
• Redness, irritation, and blotchiness
• Rough or uneven texture
The good news is that while you can’t erase all sun damage, research shows you can repair, protect, and significantly improve visible signs of ageing with the right approach.

How the Sun Damages Skin
Sun exposure is the single biggest external contributor to premature ageing. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays penetrate the skin and disrupt its structure at a cellular level.
• Collagen breakdown: UVA rays penetrate into the dermis, degrading collagen and elastin fibres. This structural damage leads to sagging, wrinkles, and loss of firmness (Parrado et al., 2017).
• DNA damage: UVB rays can cause direct DNA mutations in skin cells, contributing to pigmentation changes and even precancerous lesions (D’Orazio et al., 2013).
• Oxidative stress: Sunlight increases reactive oxygen species (ROS), unstable molecules that damage proteins, lipids, and DNA, accelerating photoageing (Vannucci et al., 2023).
Dermatologists describe photoageing as a cumulative condition — damage builds gradually over time and may only become visible years later.
Can You Actually Repair Sun Damage?
The short answer: not completely. However, multiple studies confirm that targeted skincare and daily protection can significantly reduce visible damage.
• Antioxidants: Polyphenols and plant-derived antioxidants neutralise free radicals, reduce inflammation, and support cellular repair (Vannucci et al., 2023; Draelos et al., 2022).
• Barrier support: Plant oils rich in essential fatty acids help restore the skin’s lipid barrier, improving hydration and elasticity.
• Collagen support: Certain actives encourage skin renewal, smoothing fine lines and brightening uneven tone.
Professional treatments such as peels and laser therapies may accelerate resurfacing, but consistency at home remains foundational.
Crucially, none of this matters without sunscreen. Sunscreen prevents new UV-induced damage, allowing antioxidants and restorative ingredients to work more effectively.

Why Antioxidants + Sunscreen Work Better Together
Sunscreen alone is powerful, but it does not block all oxidative stress. UVA rays can still generate free radicals even when SPF is applied. Antioxidants step in to neutralise these ROS before they trigger further damage.
Clinical research supports this complementary strategy:
• Polyphenols from plant extracts reduce oxidative stress and improve visible signs of photodamage (Vannucci et al., 2023).
• Bisabolol, derived from chamomile, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory benefits and enhanced photoprotection when combined with UV filters (Nutrients, 2022).
Together, sunscreen prevents, and antioxidants repair.

How to Use an Antioxidant Serum with Sunscreen
For optimal results, consistency is key:
Cleanse gently to remove impurities.
Apply an antioxidant serum to face, neck, and décolletage.
Moisturise to support hydration.
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) as the final morning step.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors.
Using antioxidants both morning (under SPF) and evening enhances ongoing repair.
The Bottom Line
Sun damage doesn’t have to define your skin. With a consistent routine that combines antioxidants and sunscreen, you can:
• Rehydrate dry, stressed skin
• Brighten uneven tone
• Strengthen your skin barrier
• Protect against future UV damage
Think of it as your skin’s long-term insurance policy: repair today, protect tomorrow.
